Moving Into a WNY Home With an Existing Alarm System? Here's What to Do

You just got the keys to your new Western New York home, and there is a security keypad by the door. Maybe there are motion sensors in the corners and a camera or two outside. So now what? Can you use the system? Is it still monitored? Do you even know the code?

This is one of the most common questions we hear at Advanced Alarm, and it comes up in a lot of our customer stories. Plenty of homeowners have moved into a house with a system already installed and were not sure whether to trust it. Here is a friendly, step-by-step guide to help you figure out what you have and what to do next.

First, Find Out What You Actually Have

Before you do anything else, take a quick inventory. Walk the house and look for the keypad or control panel, door and window sensors, motion detectors, glass break sensors, smoke or carbon monoxide detectors, cameras, and any yard signs or window stickers. Snap a few photos on your phone.

The brand on the keypad and the yard sign can tell you a lot. It gives you a starting point for who installed it and whether the equipment is current or dated. If you are not sure what you are looking at, that is completely normal, and it is something we can identify for you quickly.

Do Not Assume the System Is Monitored

Here is the part that surprises people most. An installed system is not the same as an active, monitored system. When a home is sold, the previous owner almost always cancels their monitoring service. That means the keypad may still beep and the sensors may still chirp, but no monitoring center is watching. If the alarm goes off, help is not automatically on the way.

If you want real protection, the system needs active monitoring connected to a central station. Until that is set up, treat the existing equipment as decoration, not defense.

Change the Codes and Passwords Right Away

You do not know who has the old user codes. The previous owners, their family, a house cleaner, a dog walker, or a contractor could all still have access. As soon as you can, change the master code and remove any old user codes. Also update the verbal password or safe word used to confirm your identity with a monitoring center. This one step closes a security gap most new homeowners never think about.

Test Before You Trust

An existing system is only useful if it works. It helps to confirm that the keypad powers on and communicates, the sensors trigger when doors and windows open, the motion detectors respond, and the backup battery still holds a charge. Systems that sat unused through a few WNY winters can develop dead batteries or offline sensors. A professional test and walk-through is the fastest way to know exactly what is working and what is not.

Decide What to Keep, Reactivate, or Upgrade

Once you know the condition of the system, you have three good paths, and often the answer is a mix of all three.

• Take it over and reactivate. If the equipment is in good shape and reasonably current, we can often take over the system, reactivate monitoring, and get you protected without a full replacement.

• Keep the good, replace the dated. Sometimes the wiring and sensors are fine, but the panel is old. Upgrading the brain of the system while reusing solid parts can save you money.

• Start fresh where it makes sense. If the system is very old or was never quite right for the home, a modern setup with app control and smart automation may be the better long-term choice.
